Why Coding Internships?

Updated: Jun 7, 2023

Introduction:

Securing an internship opportunity while still in high school can be a challenge, but with an open mind and a little help from personal connections, doors can open unexpectedly. In my case, I was fortunate enough to be a business solutions internship at Ariel Premium Supply Inc., a promotional product printer. Today, I want to share my journey of how I landed this valuable experience and the skills I acquired during my time there.

Building Connections:

One of the key factors that helped me secure this internship was my personal connection with the general manager of Ariel. Through networking and maintaining relationships, I was able to express my interest in coding and business solutions, which aligned perfectly with the company's needs. This connection served as a foot in the door, giving me a direct line of communication and an opportunity to showcase my skills and passion for technology. Without this personal connection, I would have been more hesitant to reach out and apply for this internship.

The Internship Experience:

During my time at Ariel, I had the privilege of working on various exciting projects with some awesome people. One of the main areas I focused on was developing a web application that linked with their customer data. I delved into coding languages such as React, SQL, and Python. The internship allowed me to work on real-life projects, honing my skills in coding websites and using professional APIs such as the Google Maps API to create seamless integrations. These hands-on experiences provided valuable insights into the world of software development and problem-solving. Additionally, I worked with the IT head on cybersecurity, where I learned about the application of different tools to effectively manage threats. I also worked with another business solutions intern on delivering small packages with a drone.

Gratitude and Takeaways:

I am immensely grateful to Ariel for providing me with this incredible opportunity. The exposure to real-world challenges and the chance to work alongside professionals significantly contributed to my growth as a coder and problem solver. This internship taught me the importance of continuous learning and adaptability in the fast-paced tech industry.

Moreover, the experience reinforced the significance of personal connections and networking. It serves as a reminder that building and nurturing relationships can open doors and present unexpected opportunities. I am thankful for the support and guidance I received from the general manager and the entire team at Ariel.

I encourage other high school students with a passion for coding and technology to explore similar opportunities and never hesitate to leverage personal connections. With dedication and a bit of luck, anyone can get an internship experience that looks good on college applications and prepares you for a future in the tech industry.
