Leadership Essential Skills

By Atina Lee

So what is the key to being a good leader? Is it teaching your peers and co-workers? Communication? Connections? Or maybe being open-minded. And yes, all of these point to the direction of becoming a great leader but it is more than just that. In this article, you will the essential factors that makes a person go from a GOOD leader to a GREAT leader.

Focusing on your team and not only yourself

To be a good leader, you must put your teammates' needs before yourself. You want to make sure everyone is on the same boat and knows what their tasks and responsibilities are. As the leader, you are responsible for your teammates so creating a friendly and open-minded environment allows better relationships. This also gets rid of any fear of asking questions or concerns which can greatly impact your project.

Set clear goals and a good schedule

To be a good leader, setting a firm goal allows you to not only be organized and successful, but also being a good role model to those around you and especially your teammates. Setting a goal also means creating a sensible schedule to complete the task. You don’t want any members of the team to procrastinate so creating mini due dates allow the members to create good, quality work instead of rushed, sloppy work.

Be Firm

To allow your team to reach success, you must be firm and assertive. Showing a clear and confident personality creates an environment where people respect you. This creates a relationship of leader and follower. In my experience of leadership, showing a firm and determined mindset allows the work to be done well and concise. This is not saying being soft is horrible but carrying that aura of confidence allows those around you to admire and follow you.

Encouragement and Support

As said above, being firm can allow you to achieve the results you are gunning for but don’t be overly assertive. Encouragement and support is a huge part of being a great leader. You want your teammates to regard you as someone they can rely on. Being firm all the time may not create a positive environment. Instead, you want to let your teammates know they can come to you anytime by encouraging and supporting them.

Honesty and Integrity

Being a great leader always means to be honest and have integrity. You should always encourage your teammates to be honest about their work too. Cheating and plagiarizing will not be condoned. If discovered, the consequences might be severe for the leader along with the teammate. In general, being honest creates a healthy state of mind along with you image around everyone else as they know you are trustworthy.

Conclusion

In conclusion, being a leader is not just about leading the team. It also about all the little aspects of what your actions are to make a team more successful. You want to create a team that relies on each other and create success.
